Hiking Boots Laced, Feeling the Sun, and Tasting South Tyrol
From mid-May, the Passeiertal begins to transform. The last snowfields slowly retreat, the first signs of life appear on the alpine meadows, and the hiking trails become greener day by day. For many guests, this is the most beautiful time: not too hot, not too crowded, but full of possibilities.
Those spending early summer in the Passeiertal experience nature awakening with a view – and the perfect start to the warm season.
1. The First Hikes – Sunny, Quiet, Scenic
When temperatures in the valley rise to a pleasant 15 to 20 °C, it is the season for classic spring hikes. Particularly rewarding:
- Ulfas Waalweg
Ulfas Alm, via the Waalweg to the Waalerhütte. An easy hike with views across the Passeiertal
- Passeirer Höhenweg with Grand Panoramic Views
From the Römerkehre via the Jaufen ridge to the “Fastnachter,” up to the Fleckner (2331 m), to Glaitner Joch (2249 m), and back via the Passeirer Höhenweg to the Römerkehre
First crossings possible from late May in good snow conditions. Demanding, but worth it.
- Alpine Meadow Hike Walten – Sailertal – Seebergalm
Ideal as a first longer tour, well-marked trails, stops possible depending on hut openings.
"When the sun drives away the snow and the valley fills with scents again, that is a special moment for us every year. The hiking trails get more colorful day by day – and the mountains invite us once more."
Matthias Augscheller, Host at the Jägerhof
2. Fresh Herbs, Young Cheese, Full Energy
Early summer in the Passeiertal not only brings pleasant temperatures but also a wealth of culinary delights. South Tyrol’s regional cuisine offers a variety of specialties at this time:
- Fresh Alpine Butter and Cream Cheese:
Made from milk of cows grazing on lush alpine meadows, these products are distinguished by their pure, authentic taste.
- Chives, Yarrow & Wild Garlic:
These aromatic herbs give traditional dishes like spreads, dumplings, or side dishes a special touch.
- South Tyrolean Speck & Schüttelbrot:
A classic combination that is never missing from a snack – lovingly called “Marende” in South Tyrol. The spicy speck pairs perfectly with the crispy flatbread.
These products reflect the culinary diversity of South Tyrol and invite guests to explore the region through taste.
3. Enjoyment with a View – What Awaits Guests from Mid-May
Those planning an early summer holiday in the Passeiertal can look forward to:
✔ Sunny hiking days with clear air and little crowd
✔ Accessible valley and mid-mountain trails with stops for refreshment
✔ Fresh seasonal cuisine – from farm to hotel
✔ Warm days, pleasant nights – ideal for active holidays
✔ A warm welcome from South Tyrol’s nature & lifestyle
"We look forward to every guest joining us for the new summer season – with eyes open to nature and hearts open to the simplicity of our cuisine."
Irmgard Augscheller, Hostess at the Jägerhof
When a stay is especially worthwhile:
- End of May to mid-June: perfect balance of tranquility, climate, and nature
- Alpine meadow openings: depending on altitude, from around May 20
- Hiking weather: average 7 hours of sun per day, ideal conditions for longer hikes
Early summer is an invitation – to all who love it authentic.
Step by step, gaze by gaze, fork and palate in harmony.
The Passeiertal then shows its gentlest side.
