Alpine hiking in the Passeiertal
Mountain summer with a view – from Matatzspitze to Seeber Lake

The Passeier Valley reveals its most alpine side in summer. From Walten, countless trails lead up into a mountain world that is untouched, serene, and far-reaching – completely without cable cars or staged attractions. Those who ascend here do so under their own power – and are rewarded with special moments: panoramic views, clear mountain lakes, quiet alpine pastures, and rustic huts.
This article presents three favorite alpine hikes in the region – including walking times, elevation gain, refreshment tips, and bus connections.
1. Matatzspitze (2,179 m): The Quiet Classic
Start: Ulfas (Kratzegg parking lot)
Walking time: approx. 3:30 h (ascent)
Elevation gain: approx. 1,000 m
Difficulty: medium to challenging
Refreshments: Ulfaser Alm and Waalerhütte or bring a snack
The Matatzspitze is considered one of the most scenic peaks in the front Passeier Valley. The trail first winds gently over alpine meadows and larch slopes, then becomes steeper through rocky terrain. At the summit, a wide view over the Passeier Valley up to the Texel Group awaits. Ideal for experienced hikers with sure-footedness – and a love of solitude.
2. Hirzer (2,781 m): Highest Peak of the Sarntal Alps
Start: Klammeben (access via cable car from Saltaus possible)
Walking time: approx. 5:00 h (round trip)
Elevation gain: approx. 1,000 m
Difficulty: medium
Refreshments: Hirzerhütte, Resegger Alm (depending on route)
Those seeking great heights will find the Hirzer the right choice. At 2,781 m, it is the highest peak of the Sarntal Alps – and a true vantage point. On clear days, the view stretches to the Dolomites and the Vinschgau. From Saltaus, the Hirzer cable car allows an easier start – perfect for saving elevation while still enjoying an alpine hike.
"For many guests, the Hirzer is a destination with a wow effect. The path is easy to follow, the view spectacular – and the hut stop afterwards tastes twice as good."

3. Seeber Lake (2,012 m): A Natural Jewel at the End of the Valley
Start: Timmelsjoch Road parking lot (near Timmels Bridge)
Walking time: approx. 2:00 h (round trip)
Elevation gain: approx. 400 m
Difficulty: easy to medium
Refreshments: none – bring a snack!
The Seeber Lake is one of South Tyrol’s most beautiful mountain lakes – turquoise, clear, and nestled in a rugged high alpine landscape. The trail is well-maintained, technically easy, and suitable for family-friendly alpine hikes. Particularly beautiful in the morning, when the sunlight makes the water surface sparkle.
Arrival & Bus Connections
- Matatzspitze: Not accessible by bus (July–August there is a 1–2 hiking bus, but not ideal). Car required to Ulfas parking lot.
- Saltaus (Hirzer cable car): Bus line 239 from Walten to St. Leonhard, then line 240 or car (parking at the valley station).
- Timmelsjoch Road (Seeber Lake): Access by car to Timmels Bridge or seasonally via bus (check current timetable: www.suedtirolmobil.info).
